The Foster Botanical Garden offers a fresh, green oasis in the middle of Honolulu.
The Foster Botanical Garden is the oldest of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens.
It started in 1853 when Queen Kalama leased a small area of land to William Hillebrand, a young German doctor and botanist.
The garden was later sold to Thomas and Mary Foster, who continued to develop it.
Then it was bequeated to the City of Honolulu in 1930. Its director at the time, Dr. Harold Lyon, introduced over 10,000 trees and plants in the following 27 years.
The garden covers 13.5 acres and is located in the middle of the city, on North Vineyard Boulevard. Access is free.
