HO'OMALUHIA BOTANICAL GARDEN
The Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden is part of the five botanical gardens administered by the Honolulu Botanical Gardens.
Located in Kaneohe, it was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers as flood protection for Kaneohe, the site of an important Marine Corps base, and opened to the public in 1982.
The garden covers 400 acres and emphasizes plants native to Hawaii and the Polynesian islands. Due to its young age – for a botanical garden – some trees have not yet reached their peak height.
Because of its flood protection mission, the garden includes an earth dam holding a pond. Admission is free, as with the other botanical gardens administered by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City and County of Honolulu.

THE TREES (27 photos)
When I pulled the bark on this tree to look inside I got a nasty surprise - a centipede about 10 inches long was hiding in there.
We only see the lower part of its body on this photo. These arthropods have 21 body segments.
